• Mini-symposium phantom dosimetry

    Organisation: KU Leuven

Venue: auditorium BMW5, O&N2, campus Gasthuisberg, Leuven

“Development of the Realistic Antropomorphic Flexible Phantom for applications in dosimetry”

Maria Zankl is the Deputy Director of the Research Unit Medical Radiation Physics and Diagnostics of the Helmholtz Zentrum München. She is considered an international authority in the field of numerical dosimetry and computational phantoms. She has led the development of the GSF voxel computational phantom family, and in 2007, in consideration of the high accuracy, her phantoms were chosen by the ICRP to constitute the new Adult Male and Female Reference Computational Phantoms.

Dr. Lee is the Head of the Dosimetry Unit of the National Cancer Institute. He is an internationally recognized expert in diagnostic and therapeutic dosimetry, and specialized in the development of computational phantoms for individualized dose reconstruction. He is considered a top expert in the most recent techniques of phantom development based on Boundary Representation, which he used to develop a series of computational phantoms. In collaboration with the University of Florida, he developed a series of phantoms with non-standard body sizes, which are used to increase the accuracy in individualized organ dosimetry for medical patients. Additionally, his paediatric phantom series is going to serve as a reference for the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP).
Dr. Lee has developed dosimetry methods for diagnostic and therapeutic radiation dosimetry procedures using Monte Carlo simulation coupled with his computational human phantoms. For radiotherapy, he applies these methods to multiple epidemiological studies of second cancers in radiotherapy patients and is extending the methodology to include dosimetry methods for proton therapy patients. For diagnostic procedures, he focuses on CT dosimetry for epidemiological studies of CT risk, but his research interests include also radiography, fluoroscopically-guided interventional procedures, and nuclear medicine practices.
