









RPO and RPE
On 5 December 2013, the Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM (pdf) was adopted laying down basic safety standards for protection against the dangers arising from exposure to ionising radiation, and repealing Directives 89/618/Euratom, 90/641/Euratom, 96/29/Euratom, 97/43/Euratom and 2003/122/Euratom.
Article 82 describes the Radiation Protection Expert (RPE) and Article 84 describes the Radiation Protection Officer (RPO) as followed:
RPE - Radiation Protection Expert
An individual having the knowledge, training and experience needed to give radiation protection advice in order to ensure effective protection of individuals, whose capacity to act is recognized by the competent authorities.
RPO - Radiation Protection Officer
An individual technically competent in radiation protection matters relevant for a given type of practice who is designated by the undertaking to oversee the implementation of the radiation protection arrangements of the undertaking.
